On Image Hit Highlights
Concordance Viewer support on-image search term hit highlights when you have searchable PDF files. There are several ways to load the searchable PDF files.
•Load File imports with the OPT pointing to searchable PDF images.
•Load File imports with OPT load file pointing to native files.
•Concordance will create the Near Native folder and convert supported files to searchable PDF files to use with Concordance Viewer.
For large datasets this process may take time as the native files are converted to a searchable PDF (near native). |
•E-doc or E-mail import creates a near native searchable PDF.
On-image search hit highlights Requirements
•Concordance Viewer
•Searchable PDF Files
•Indexed database
Search Hit Highlighting
1.In Concordance, use any of the search options (Quick Search bar, Simple Search, Form Search, or Advanced Search) to enter search terms and execute the search.
2.Search results are returned in the Concordance database. When Browse view is active the terms are highlighted.
3.Click the camera icon at the bottom to launch Concordance Viewer. Search terms are highlighted in the viewer. The active hit is one shade lighter than the highlight color.
Concordance Viewer – Hit Navigation Options
The Hit Navigation options appear in the top-right corner of the Viewer pane when there is an active search.
1.Hit Information: The Hit Information icon will appear when a search is active. Hover over the icon to see information specific to search hits for that document..
2.Information Message: Provides a message about discrepancies between the text highlights and on-image hit highlights. There are two information messages.
a.Hits Conflict: Indicates the number of Text hits (Concordance database) versus Image hits (Concordance Viewer). You can expect to see mismatches as there are some differences in how the search is run in the database and viewer. See Understanding Search Hit Conflicts.
b.Image is not Searchable PDF: Only searchable PDF files are supported for on-image hit highlights.
3.Hit Navigation: Navigate from one hit to the next. Hits are highlighted with same Highlight color set in Concordance (Tools-Preferences-Searching-Highlight). The active hit is one shade lighter than the highlight color as illustrated in the image below.
Toggle Hit Highlights
By default, on-image hit highlights are enabled in Concordance Viewer. While working in Concordance Viewer, you can choose to toggle hit highlights on and off. When the viewer is closed, the setting is restored to the default with on-image hit highlights enabled.
1.In Concordance Viewer, select the Document Options menu from the Viewer Toolbar.
2.Click in the box to the left of Toggle Hit Highlights to either enable (check) or disable (uncheck) the hit highlights.
Understanding Search Hit Conflicts
When working with Concordance, it's important to recognize that discrepancies may arise between search term hits in the Concordance Database and the Concordance Viewer. These differences stem from how each tool processes and displays search results.
Key Differences in Search Behavior
Feature |
Concordance Database |
Concordance Viewer |
Search Scope |
All fields (metadata, notes, document text) |
Document text only |
Search Execution |
Runs full query logic on the entire database. |
Runs word matching within the document, highlighting terms found |
Search Clauses |
Supports complex clauses (i.e., adjacent, near, same, notsame, etc) |
Does not support complex clauses |
Highlighting Logic |
Matches based on query |
Over-inclusive, highlights all term variants |
How the Search Works
1.Search is executed in the Concordance Database.
2.Matching records are retrieved.
3.Concordance Viewer highlights terms within the document images.
a.Viewer highlights any instance of the term – even if it appears inside of a word.
b.Viewer does not apply advanced search logic when highlighting.
Conflicts to Watch For
•False positives in Viewer:
oViewer may highlight partial matches or unrelated instances of the term.
•Missing Highlights for Complex Queries:
oIf your search uses clauses like adjacent or not same, Viewer won’t reflect that logic visually.
•Field-Specific Searches:
oIf your database search targets metadata or notes, those hits won’t appear in Viewer highlights.
Best Practices
•Validate Advanced and Complex search results in Concordance Database.
•Use Viewer for Visual Reference Only:
oTreat Viewer highlights as a guide – not a definitive match.
Known behavior with on-image hit highlights
•When a search is active and on-image hit highlights are present in Concordance Viewer, highlights may disappear when an image tool is selected. This may be redaction and markup tools, items from the Select drop-down menu, or Document Options menu.
oResolve by navigating to the next page in the document then back. The on-image hit highlights are returned.
